The guilty netflix2/20/2023 When Henry "kidnapped" Emily, he was really trying to take her back to the mental health facility she'd previously been to for help. Henry then reveals the full extent of the situation: Henry and Emily agreed to take Emily off of her medication because the price went up - which obviously resulted in a tragedy when her mental health deteriorated, and she hurt Oliver. In a shocking twist right before Emily attacks Henry (at Baylor's urging), Emily reveals that she cut baby Oliver open to "save" him from snakes that were in his stomach and hurting him. Starring: Kiara Advani, Akansha Ranjan Kapoor, Gurfateh Pirzada. The tension builds as Baylor becomes convinced that Henry is the bad guy in the story, and Baylor does anything he can to save Emily. When a college heartthrob is accused of rape by a less popular student, his girlfriend navigates various versions of the story in search of the truth. While a movie that mainly focuses on a man in front of his computer may not seem all that interesting, Gyllenhaal delivers an electrifying performance, and the film's many twists and turns will leave you scratching your head at the end.Īt one point, Baylor calls Emily's home phone number after finding it in the police records, and her daughter Abby (Christiana Montoya) explains what happened - Emily and her estranged husband Henry (Peter Sarsgaard) had a fight, and Henry took Emily away in their car, leaving Abby and her baby brother Oliver home alone. Oh, and the entire film takes place at Baylor's work desk as he speaks on the phone to various personnel in an attempt to track down the victim. "The Guilty" is a race against the clock as Baylor tries to find out who the woman is, where she is, and just how much danger she's really in before it's too late. The majority of calls Baylor receives are not very interesting to him - until he gets a call from a woman who reveals she's been kidnapped. In the heart-pounding film, Gyllenhaal plays a Los Angeles police officer named Joe Baylor who's demoted to working as a 911 operator as a temporary punishment for a previous unknown infraction. The Guilty is out on Netflix from October 1, 2021.One of the most recent films to take place in one location is the tense thriller "The Guilty," starring Jake Gyllenhaal. But hey, Jake Gyllenhaal makes it feel new and fresh and for many, this will be their first encounter with the story! Of course, it is when it’s simply a translated version of a foreign film. Having said all that – and despite the original being better than this remake – the US version of The Guilty is still a very good movie. The latter seems like some strange form of foreshadowing. While Nic Pizzolatto created the brilliant True Detective series, his debut as a writer was on the US remake of the Danish series The Killing. Even the dialogue is directly translated in most scenes. I have to say that while I am usually a big fan of Nic Pizzolatto, this is just too easy. MORE ON REMAKESĬheck out our “Best Horror Remakes” feature which includes all kinds of remakes > However, I too could be a screenplay writer if all that was required was translating a Danish screenplay. Something that obviously wasn’t part of the Danish movie. However, they mostly have to do with changing street names and dealing with the fires of California. Sure, there are some very minor changes to certain elements of the story. However, in this case, saying “based on” is simply another way of saying: We translated the script and shot this movie in virtually the same manner. And, of course, there’s the whole “based on the motion picture Den Skyldige” moniker attached to this movie. In fact, it’s not even as good, which was a big surprise to me.Īntoine Fuqua ( The Equalizer) is the director of The Guilty while the screenplay credit goes to Nic Pizzolatto. However, if you’ve watched the original movie (and you really should) then there’s nothing new in this film. The new Shudder movie Mosquito State is a mindf*ck worth checking out >Īll the actors obviously deliver solid and powerful performances, as you would expect. The voice actors in The Guilty include Riley Keough ( The Lodge), Peter Sarsgaard ( The Lie), and Ethan Hawke ( The Black Phone).Īlso, since Jake Gyllenhaal’s character, Joe Baylor, is a police officer who’s been demoted to take 911 calls, we also have bit parts from callers. These include Paul Dano ( Okja) and Beau Knapp who we just watched be brilliant in Mosquito State (out on Shudder). Just as it was the case for the Danish movie. However, most other actors are only part of this movie as voice actors. The impressive “voice only” cast of The GuiltyĮven though Jake Gyllenhaal is the all-important lead actor in The Guilty, the remake sports an impressive cast.
